Title: Spanish Fort 220K 11/22 7:30 am Post by Kwijybow on Nov 4th, 2008, 9:16am [Title changed to 7:30AM -- PB] Hi Guys, as an alternative to the Willow Park brevets I will be riding Ray's Spanish Fort Route, starting in Bolivar at 7:30 am. Let me know if you'd like to join me, and I'll make sure I have cards and cues for everyone. Take Care, Nelson. |
Title: Re: Spanish Fort 220K 11/22 8am Post by Bud_Bent on Nov 4th, 2008, 10:15am As long as the weather is ok, and someone volunteers to drag me up those hills, I'm in. |
Title: Re: Spanish Fort 220K 11/22 8am Post by bikerteam on Nov 4th, 2008, 11:45am Bud, compared to the Cup Cake Permanent, this is a piece of cake ;D Greg, help me here; you've ridden Spanish Fort. Unlike the Cup Cake Perm, the hills on Spanish Fort are spaced out. Wait... Forget the hills... This ride is very scenic (bring a camera), good roads and very, very low traffic. Plus, for only a few bonus miles, you can cross into Oklahoma on a pretty cool bridge that has a wide shoulder as you cross the red river. According to George Evans, there is now a convenience store in Montague. It's off-route slightly by continuing south on TX-59 past the FM-455 turn about 0.5 mile. The store is on the right in the same building as a steak restaurant. Also, there is a church in Slidel, 9 miles from the finish on the left. A working faucet on the west side of the main building between two air conditioning units that had good tasting cool water. There was a faucet on the south (front) of the building, but it was not operational. NOW FOR THE FUN STUFF Just south of St. Jo a few miles is an eclectic ranch, similar to the Cadillac ranch in Amarillo. There are VW Beetles in the ground, a strange array of telephone poles that must be viewed from different angles to appreciate, and other assorted art. Everything is close and viewable from the road (Hwy 677). So take a few minutes and enjoy this. At approximately mile 45, just north of St. Jo, which you can see on the elevation profile is a 400-500' descent. It's name is "Gordon Mountain", though obviously it's just a tough hill. The view from the top just before you descend is very pretty. You can see to the Red River. West of Spanish Fort on Hwy 103 is a huge expanse of oil wells (hundreds and hundreds). Forestburg has a nice deli, though the deli closes at 3pm on Saturdays and the store closes at 5pm. |

Title: Re: Spanish Fort 220K 11/22 8am Post by aikigreg on Nov 4th, 2008, 7:36pm For scenery, I think it's the best 200k I've ridden. The hills are tough, but mostly spaced out as you said. I'm in so long as I get my permanent done for the month. |
Title: Re: Spanish Fort 220K 11/22 8am Post by Kwijybow on Nov 4th, 2008, 9:01pm Hi Greg, If we're talking R12 here Spanish Fort can count again. Take Care, Nelson. |

how do you figure? I didn't do it as a brevet....did I? |
Title: Re: Spanish Fort 220K 11/22 8am Post by Kwijybow on Nov 4th, 2008, 9:48pm R12 can be the same route 12 times if you like, you just get mileage credit the 1st time though, but it still counts each time as a valid R12 ride. As a matter of fact OK is OK was my finishing ride even though I didn't get mileage credit, having done it within the same calendar year. Take Care, Nelson. |
Title: Re: Spanish Fort 220K 11/22 8am Post by aikigreg on Nov 4th, 2008, 10:58pm oh, sweet! |
Title: Re: Spanish Fort 220K 11/22 8am Post by bikerteam on Nov 5th, 2008, 6:47am Greg (et. all), The reason for this rule is to enhance the popularity of the R12 program. Since many states have limited Permanents, it would be impossible to complete an R12. Thus, you can ride your favorite 200k (or longer) Permanent 12 consecutive times, but as Nelson said, you only get mileage credit for it one time per calendar year. |
Title: Re: Spanish Fort 220K 11/22 8am Post by Kwijybow on Nov 10th, 2008, 10:20am Everybody OK with the 8am start or would you rather back it up 30 minutes or 1 hour. Sunrise is right close to 7am or so. Take Care, Nelson. |
Title: Re: Spanish Fort 220K 11/22 8am Post by FlyingLaZBoy on Nov 10th, 2008, 10:34am 'fraid I can't make this one, I'm already leading a "breakfast ride" with GDB.... :( |
Title: Re: Spanish Fort 220K 11/22 8am Post by aikigreg on Nov 10th, 2008, 10:42am I hate to say it, but I'd vote for 7:30. We barely made it in before dark yesterday as it was, and it's going to take longer to do Spanish Fort, for sure. |
Title: Re: Spanish Fort 220K 11/22 8am Post by bikerteam on Nov 10th, 2008, 12:21pm There is a new store at the start of the ride in Bolivar. I haven't changed the official start location yet (I don't know the store name), but I propose we meet at this new store. If you're coming north on I35, exit highway 455 in Sanger, and head west. The new store is ~4 miles west of Sangar, and will be on the left hand side, about 1/2 mile before you come to the official opening control in Bolivar. You can't miss the new store, there isn't much else in Bolivar. Assuming the ride will start at 7:30, let's plan to depart the new store at 7:15 to give us time to go to the official control and get a receipt. Here's a portion of an e-mail from George Elizondo about the new store: The new store has a huge parking lot. It's well stocked and has a nice grill as well as tables. They're now serving hot breakfast platters too, not just breakfast burritos. Jeff, George and I had sandwiches there after our ride and it was very good. |
Title: Re: Spanish Fort 220K 11/22 8am Post by Strada177 on Nov 10th, 2008, 12:53pm I vote for 7:30am. |
Title: Re: Spanish Fort 220K 11/22 8am Post by Kwijybow on Nov 11th, 2008, 9:07am Bud if its OK with you we'll move the start time to 7:30am then, meet at the Valero before riding to the Grocery for the official start. Looks like I at least of a few more months of employment, so we be there and not out job hunting quite yet. Also Steve the 400K is currently a tenative go. Anybody else thinking about the 400K? Take Care, Nelson |

Title: Re: Spanish Fort 220K 11/22 7:30 am Post by bikerteam on Nov 17th, 2008, 9:30am Nelson - since I'm the route owner I'm not allowed to publish the ride. So please be sure to reiterate to those who will ride Spanish For this Saturday that Edward has officially approved the new start location, where it is, and the time. Also, weather is looking good for this Saturday. |
Title: Re: Spanish Fort 220K 11/22 7:30 am Post by Kwijybow on Nov 17th, 2008, 9:36am Sorry about that yes, we're meeting and starting at the new control the Valero. I've only mentioned the ride here so, as not to appear to be trying to lure people away from the LSR brevet in Willow Point. 7:30 am rollout. I think we have the Pettys, Bud, Greg, Ray and Me, am I missing anyone? EV? Take Care, Nelson. |

Title: Re: Spanish Fort 220K 11/22 7:30 am Post by Bud_Bent on Nov 17th, 2008, 8:30pm Nelson or Ray, do you have a pdf cue sheet you could email me? I like to custom size one to print for my map holder. Mark and Linda are thinking about joining us. Has anyone posted the ride in the LSR google group? |
Title: Re: Spanish Fort 220K 11/22 7:30 am Post by Kwijybow on Nov 17th, 2008, 9:05pm Hi Bud, I was avoiding an LSR posting because I didn't want to seem to be stealing from the Willow Park Brevets. I'll send you a Cue tomorrow as it is on my work computer at the moment. Take Care, Nelson. |

Title: Re: Spanish Fort 220K 11/22 7:30 am Post by bikerteam on Nov 18th, 2008, 6:20am If Mark joins us, casually suggest he ride the XStream! you don't really need a cue sheet Bud. It's a big o' loop, and this is one route where you're 99.99999% certain to not get lost. The .00001% is in case of road closure. But, I'm riding with a GPS this week! Weather is still looking great for Saturday. |

Title: Re: Spanish Fort 220K 11/22 7:30 am Post by aikigreg on Nov 18th, 2008, 12:47pm It's a simple enough route that even I can navigate it! :) Given the abundance of good road, few turns, and hills, I'm considering trying a speed run on the course. Might be fun to see how that carbent climbs. |
Title: Re: Spanish Fort 220K 11/22 7:30 am Post by FlyingLaZBoy on Nov 18th, 2008, 5:21pm Count me back in for this one, unless Terrie reminds me of something she has planned for us to do... I've backed out of my GDB ride, this sounds like a much better offer.... Could I get the cue sheet in Excel form, pretty please, so I can make a "Large Font" version of it? Paul |
Title: Re: Spanish Fort 220K 11/22 7:30 am Post by Bud_Bent on Nov 19th, 2008, 9:07am Now the forecast is starting to slip. Forecast for Saturday in Sanger says low of 36 and high of 58. Sheesh.... |

Welcome to the forum, Cheri! The start time is 7:30. For those who don't know Cheri, she is another of those crazy members of the Lone Star Randonneurs, and a very nice person. She isn't on a recumbent (yet). It turns out that I am not going to be able to ride. Saturday has been made a mandatory work day at the dungeon where I work, so we can take January 2nd as a paid holiday day. |

Glad to see you on this forum Cheri. You've pulled me many times on my traditional bike, now I can draft you on my recumbent. It's nice to hear positive comments about bent riders, because normally bents are shunned. We make up for it in personality ;D It's been with great joy to introduce recumbents to LSR. Over the past three years we've grown to ~10 active bent riders in LSR. We hope you can join us Saturday. Spanish Fort is... well... you be the judge.... |

Title: Re: Spanish Fort 220K 11/22 7:30 am Post by bikerteam on Nov 21st, 2008, 9:54am Bring your cameras, there are places you'll definately want to stop and take pictures. For example, about 1 mile before St. Jo is an eceltic ranch similar to the ranch outside of Amarillo with the cadillac's in the ground. This ranch not only has VW Bettles positioned like the cadillar ranch, they also have some other interesting art, all close to the road. |
