Title: GDB TT
Post by FlyingLaZBoy on Jul 24th, 2008, 9:42pm

Well, Brad and I basically went out there to, as Rowdy Roddy Piper famously said in the classic film, "They Live"...

Oh, I can't type it here, you'll just have to watch the clip:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=peZuXrxGP3M

;D :D ;)

And we were also all out of bubble gum...   :D

I was on the XS, and Brad was on his Strada.  My two prior best times with the mini-faired SXP last year for the 7.6 mile loop had been 19 min 50 sec (23 mph) and 19 min 30 sec (23.4 mph).

Brad and I were the last two to roll, he starting one minute before me.  By the time we finished, we had both passed two other riders, and I could see Brad ahead of me over the last couple of miles.

Our finishing times were "officially" 18 minutes (25.3 mph) for Brad, and  17 min 33 sec (26 mph) for me -- two whole minutes faster than my prior best   :o .  Nobody else was anywhere near under 20 minutes, to my knowledge.   :)

HOWEVER, there may have been a one minute error in timing totals -- Brad's personal timer said 19 minutes, and I have a hard time believing that I could have had a 3mph faster average, midracer or no midracer -- especially after only having ridden it for a whopping 30 minutes the night before!   Even so, if my time was 18:33, that's still a signficant decrease in time considering my newness to the "reclined" pedaling position.  It's also only about 15 seconds higher than the club course record...

Then, immediately after finishing, both my calves cramped up.... owwwwwwwwwwwwwww.....

Well done, Brad!!!

Yeah, baby...   ;)

I really need to come do this and just blow everyone away....

18:59 for me, 18:33 for you per Brent at about 8:45pm.    He found the error.   My personal timer shows 18:58. (based on the time I started pedaling to the time I stopped)

Coincidently, course record is 18:14.  I think with more time on that bike, Paul, you could reset it.    I have some 2" aluminum laying around, lets just lengthen the frame. :)

Tonight was my 375th mile anniversary of riding a recumbent.   Not bad, considering I have 804 in this month to date.

Anyhow, Paul.   Rematch next month.   Next time you're the rabbit.    :)

But ya, the DF's didn't stand a chance tonight.

Great Job Brad and Paul!  Wanted to come, but just not in the cards for me this month.  Will try again next month so don't hesitate to remind us.  How was the wind? seemed pretty strong out of the SE on my way home.  That XS is a fine looking machine!

Take Care,
Nelson.

You've already topped my best time from last year on the SXP, pal...  and that's me WITH mini-fairing and Aerotrunk!  ;)

Post by Brad Bedell on Jul 25th, 2008, 9:03am

I didn't have no stinking mid fairing or aero trunk. :)

I'll make you a deal on some Zipp 404 wheels. :)

Here are all the totals - there weren't THAT many riders.  Looks like Brent calculated it for 7.5 miles, while in the past it's been considered 7.6... so the calculated mph are a bit lower than I said earlier.

Interesting, though, that an old man of 50 whupped up on all those 30-something whippersnappers...   :D  Maybe it IS "about the bike"...

Name        Age     Time      MPH
DF
Brent Aston    38     20.57     20.62
Carlos            31     21.24     20.19
Adam Spears   33    21.38     19.97
Jeremy           31     22.23     19.3
Mark B.        Mechanical
Recumbents
Paul Brown     50     18.33     23.29
Brad Bedell     36     18.59     22.76

temperature-hot-98 degrees
Wind-     -SSE 13.6 mph

You had your chance!

Greg's got it back, now.  I rode it again Saturday for the Distance Builder, and put another ~50 miles on it.  I'm pretty impressed with it -- I believe I exceeded 35 mph on a flat sprint, at a couple of points during the ride -- typically not possible on an SXP.   There will probably be some more tweaking to be done on the design, and I have no idea what the list price is going to be when they finally come out with it in production, but it'll be a bike that's well worth considering for fast, long distance riding, that's for sure!

One thing I CAN tell you is that, going from a not-that-reclined SXP riding position to two days of fast riding in that posture and BB position has made my calves (and neck) REALLY sore...     :(   Maybe it was just because of the all-out effort of the time trial race, overdoing it the first time out.

Thanks, Greg!

OK, Brad and I are going to go back out there tonight, and see if either one of us can break the course record...   I'd put my money on Brad, since he's got a 40 pound advantage on me and is riding the VK2!!!

dammit, I wish you'd made this post earlier - I'd come out there!

Please post the results!

Title: Re: GDB TT
Post by FlyingLaZBoy on Aug 28th, 2008, 8:34pm

Well, the course record of 18:14 still stands, in part due to a 10-15 mph south wind...

My time:   18:16.........

Brad's time:  18:15........   :P

But, I'm happy with it -- 17 seconds faster than last month, and was one second (!) behind a guy 15 years younger and 35 pounds lighter on a carbon VK2 with a Zipp fully covered rear wheel worth about $2000...   Not that I'm COMPLAINING, mind you!!!   ;D :D ;)

Guess I DO need that coroplast wheel cover...   ;)

WTG, Brad!!!!

From the time keeper:

Temp-hot  Wind-Yeah, there was a SE wind    Dist.-7.5 miles
Name                    age           time         speed (mph)
Bents
Brad Bedell          36          18:15            24.6575
Paul Brown            50         18:16            24.635
Regular bikes
David Kelly            32          21:06             21.327
Brent Aston           22          22:33            19.9556

I came to a complete stop during my run.   There was a car stopped in the lane turning Left.  I didn't unclip, so the stop wasn't long, but it was a stop none the less.  Probably cost me 12-15 seconds, if not more as I was upper 20mph when I had to stop.     No course record for me :(   Maybe next month or next year.

I can't say that I'm a convert, more so than just like riding something different from time to time.  I still split my weekly mileage between the two bikes.    But to answer our question,  about 2 months now.     I still have a long way to go to get my legs conditioned to the new position.

Thanks you answered my question.  What NEW mussle groups do you feel are getting worked out now with the Low Racer?

Glutes, inner quads, hamstrings, abs and lower back.

20:04 or 20:05.   I forget,  I've got a mid to low 19 in me on the DF.   My conditioning is considerably better than it was when I did the fastest one.    With the Disc and time trial bars, I'm sure I'd be fast.     I'll probably go out and do one solo on the DF at some point.  Even without official timing, I'm sure I can get close on the actual #.

Waaaalllllll......  Looks like you were right, Greg!  This afternoon was the next running of that same GDB club time trial....  And the 18:14 record is, indeed, GONE...   8-)   I posted a 17:51...... :P ::) :o :D ....a 25.2 mph average.

Yeah, baby....   :)

Brad wasn't feeling quite up to snuff, but still posted a very similarly fast time to last time, around 18:19...

Another excellent showing by the "cheater bikes"...  ;)

18:29.    So, whatever that translates into mph.

Title: Re: GDB TT
Post by FlyingLaZBoy on Sep 22nd, 2008, 8:09am

Basic mph calculation for a 7.5 mile course is to divide 450 by your time in minutes

450/18.5  = 24.3 mph

KPH calculation is to divide 724 by your time in minutes

724/18.5 = 39.1 kph
