Title: Dallas ROS
Post by FlyingLaZBoy on May 21st, 2008, 11:14pm

Saw both Joe and Opus at the ROS tonight, but didn't really get to talk much, since my WRTrail group arrived late, and were at the tail end of the ride.  However, Joe had a mishap about a mile from the finish when a guy cut him off at a corner that had a large pothole right there...  no damage, I don't think...

What IS it about human beings in crowded traffic situations, such that even when riding bikes at a semi-controlled 10-12 mph, every time you come to a curve things slow down to 4 mph????  I saw at least three minor wrecks...  but overall, it ran quite smoothly.  Time around the lake was almost exactly one hour -- amazing...

I'd estimate somewhere over 500 riders -- I'll post pics tomorrow

Well, that was interesting to be sure Paul. I'm amazed I only got caught up in a spill only once  ;) . Like you noted, the line kept slowing up to almost a stall at many of the turns, but reflecting on it this morning, we did a bang up job for a large group that had a ton of riders who had never ridden together before. While I was surrounded with veteran riders, all was very predictable it was only when I goofed up and had several obviously non-group riders around me did I have any trouble navigating especially on 90 deg. turns. When I did spill, I was almost at a stop already because one of these newbies didn't follow the line on the right like they should have, but zipped over into my path which normally could be managed, but a pothole that had been waiting for it's sacrificial rider got its due  :P. Oh well, it was worth it especially when I saw this one rider, dressed in black and black helmet and the complete bike, tires, frame and spokes were painted a ghostly white to no doubt represent a fallen friend, worked his way past me. And there was one cyclists standing with his bike in hand and his helmet removed in a prayerful manor stood silently watching the procession as I rode by him.
When you can form a line of riders over a quarter mile long that rides that quietly for 10 miles, you will remember it for quite a while, so I believe we made the point in a very dignified manor.
