Title: Pleasant Surprise Post by woodog on Sep 30th, 2007, 10:44am On a 100 mile ride yesterday we were steady rolling down a nice set of rollers, and I was lamenting the fact that I kept spinning out at 27mph, and was wondering about how much larger chainrings were going to set me back. Keith, the guy who was riding behind me, asks 'how come you're spinning so fast downhill'. I said I've run out of gears. Keith says, you've got two left on the back. what???? Keith says 'looks like you have two more to go!'. A quick adjustment of the finger thingies (real technical of me, eh?) and I felt clunk.... then clunk... then sweet relief on the pedalling with the cadence dropping to about 85. oooooooooooooooooooooooooooo goody goody goody... two more gears!!! woo hoo!!! That's a nice surprise as I cracked 1000 miles on the bike! woo |
Title: Re: Pleasant Surprise Post by FlyingLaZBoy on Sep 30th, 2007, 1:55pm Spinning out at 27??? Try it going 43 down Goatneck Hill...! And actually, John Schlitter told me he hit 43 COASTING down it -- he's got a 54 or 56 big ring, so he could have gone even faster by pedaling... Glad you found those last two gears!!! |

Title: Re: Pleasant Surprise Post by FlyingLaZBoy on Sep 30th, 2007, 3:49pm Woo, I might recommend taking it back to the LBS and having them look at it, because you may have extended your range on the "finger thingies" close to the limit where they might snap off or unscrew further and just fall off... That's the purpose of those "thingies", actually, for fine tuning -- and your brakes have 'em, too! (not making any assumptions, here...) |
Title: Re: Pleasant Surprise Post by Strada177 on Sep 30th, 2007, 4:53pm 40.8 mph was my top speed down Goatneck hill(by I wasn't coasting). I just need a bigger motor. |
