Title: Horse Country TT Post by Kwijybow on May 11th, 2007, 12:08pm Hi Guys, http://www.3nf-inc.com/IC3/horsecountrytimetrial.htm I talked to Kevin Hill about this one and he's going to include a Recumbent category! So a fun little test. I won't be able to make the first because of an LSR brevet, but planning on going to the 2nd. Take Care, Nelson. |
Title: Re: House Country TT Post by Kwijybow on May 11th, 2007, 12:09pm Ha Ha should be Horse Country! |
Title: Re: House Country TT Post by aikigreg on May 11th, 2007, 1:16pm Oh I'm so all over this. Am I correct in seeing that they're doing several event dates? One of the latter should give me plenty of time to get the tica up to speed. If I get it that is! |
Title: Re: HoRse Country TT Post by FlyingLaZBoy on May 11th, 2007, 3:50pm Looks like if you have a southwest wind, you'll be SMOKIN' on the return leg... Sad, though that winners in other divisions apparently don't get moolah like the 'real' riders do... PB |
Title: Re: Horse Country TT Post by Bud_Bent on May 11th, 2007, 6:02pm And the climb is at the finish! Have the ambulance standing by for me....... |
Title: Re: Horse Country TT Post by DallasBikr on May 15th, 2007, 8:59am Howdy all...Kevin here... We are in fact planning to make this a 4 month series (unless the 1st one flops, then all bets are off) For now, prize list is limited as most racers have told me they really just want to race and our current budget is $0 before sponsor checks come in The climb at the end is nothing compared to the one right after the turnaround, and the one 2.6 miles before the finish. If anyone wants to come out and run it with me sometime, let me know and I'll try to work something out to join you (on my wedgie bike). My best time on it is 39:37, 18.8 mph. If anyone breaks 32 minutes I'll be really surprised, break 30 minutes and you get the "Horse Country Stud" award (aka bragging rights). If you "no-carpal-tunnel" guys can get enough 'bents out there, I'll see if I can upgrade your category to something better than medals. kevin/DallasBikr IC3 acting spoke director www.christiancycling.com |
Title: Re: Horse Country TT Post by terranimo on May 21st, 2007, 10:58am Does anyone know what \the turn around is like? Is it in the midle of the street? If YES then how wide is the street? Thanks, Terry |
Title: Re: Horse Country TT Post by DallasBikr on May 21st, 2007, 12:17pm Its a standard 2 lane rural highway, with shoulders approximately 8 feet wide on each side :) Lots of manuevering room Sorry...yes, its in the middle of the street with a Denton country Sheriff's deputy controlling traffic, as well as a volunteer or official spotter to make sure nobody cuts the course short... |
Title: Re: Horse Country TT Post by aikigreg on May 21st, 2007, 3:09pm I'm trying to make the hpv races in Michigan on June 23, but I should be good for all the other dates! |
Title: Re: Horse Country TT Post by FlyingLaZBoy on May 21st, 2007, 9:48pm Hmmm, are we gonna get Kevin to get laid back???? :D |

30 minutes for 12.5 miles? Somehow, I DOUBT it... Breaking 20 minutes on the GDB 7.6 miler is a feat in itself... (OK, I did it, but...) 8-) |
Title: Re: Horse Country TT Post by DallasBikr on May 21st, 2007, 10:06pm Me? Bent? Not this year :) Looking to convert a bike over to fixed as the next ride in the fleet A guy did Royse City in 27 something last year...a very strong climber could take a run at 30 out here in Aubrey, but not the first time around I betcha |
Title: Re: Horse Country TT Post by DallasBikr on May 30th, 2007, 9:18am http://kevinbhill.powweb.com/IC3/HorseCountryTT_Flyer.pdf Its officially approved :) USCF Annual or one-day license will be required ($60 or $10 respectively) Medals/Ribbons to top 5! Thanks, DB |
Title: Re: Horse Country TT Post by aikigreg on May 30th, 2007, 11:19am Excellent. I'll be in Michigan for an IPHVA race June 23, but I'll be there after that! |
Title: Re: Horse Country TT Post by DallasBikr on Jun 6th, 2007, 2:06pm Pre-reg is up on BikeReg, but I haven't announced it yet on TXBRA: http://www.bikereg.com/events/register.asp?eventid=4932 Since we are starting in order of registration, if you want an early start time, here's your chance :) Just a little head start from a DF Friend BTW...Kwijibow did pretty well last night at the crits in Plano...even went off the front for a lap or two. Next time I'll tell him to ditch the extra weight of the seat bag ;) |
Title: Re: Horse Country TT Post by Kwijybow on Jun 7th, 2007, 8:42am Hey at least I took of the rear blinkies! Actually I kept the seat bag because last year I flatted in the far corner, and it was a long walk back to the car without a tube. Take Care, Nelson. |
Title: Re: Horse Country TT Post by DallasBikr on Jun 7th, 2007, 8:56am Join IC3 and you can borrow my spare wheel :) Official rule...ride to the pit, get fixed, rejoin wherever you were (unless in the last 5 laps) |

How about some ride reports on those crits? I'll bet most of us would like to hear about it. |
Title: Re: Horse Country TT Post by DallasBikr on Jun 12th, 2007, 10:46am Its crit night....Nelson, are you coming out? Brother Dan got a nice shot of your breakaway attempt last week :) |
Title: Re: Horse Country TT Post by Kwijybow on Jun 12th, 2007, 11:00am Planning on being there, I'll try to be smarter this week! |
Title: Re: Horse Country TT Post by DallasBikr on Jun 18th, 2007, 12:59pm No entries yet from the 'bent crowd...I keep hearing that recumbents really can climb...anyone care to prove it!! ;) |
Title: Re: Horse Country TT Post by aikigreg on Jun 18th, 2007, 11:14pm Like I said, Ill be there te next two go rounds for sure. However, there is a small chance I could be back in the area and come for this one, but I won't know util last minute - would this create much of a problem? |
Title: Re: Horse Country TT Post by DallasBikr on Jun 19th, 2007, 6:06am only if you get there after registration closes at 8:45am :) I have to print a start list for the officials at that point. |
Title: Re: Horse Country TT Post by aikigreg on Jun 20th, 2007, 11:01pm Ok then. The prices for a flight for detroit never came down to affordable, so I'm in for the time trial. Have my trophy ready! |
Title: Re: Horse Country TT Post by DallasBikr on Jun 21st, 2007, 8:08am Well...there are 5 medals for 'benters sitting in my home office. The only trophy is for the team time trial category, which was originally only going to get "Bragging rights". Mens's and Women's wedgie categories are riding for cash... See you there, and thanks for pre-registering. Helps me a LOT on race day |
Title: Re: Horse Country TT Post by DallasBikr on Jun 24th, 2007, 12:42pm Congrats to Greg on his win! 32.16 on a very hilly course is mighty impressive. In the Men's open category, that would have been good for 22nd place, and most of theguys above that had very TT specific rides, helmets, disc wheels, etc. Well done sir... DB |
Title: Re: Horse Country TT Post by Strada177 on Jun 27th, 2007, 4:54pm During our 65 mile Celina ride this past Saturday,we rode right past Aubrey. We stopped at a stop light on Hwy 377/FM 428, and three guys in a car with road bikes on a roof rack where yelling "Nice Bacchetta's !","You guys should come ride the time trials sometime." We ride past Aubrey all the time. I have no idea what TT's are all about. I just ride my bike. |

Start and stop at the designated place. Everything else is pretty much the same :) Hey Greg...I got rid of that cop for you when we run in July (which looks probable). We'll just have the one at the turn, and a list of "road rules" every one will pick up at registration. |

I was talking the whole thing over with Bud, and we came to the conclusion that it was a silly thing, when the cop was getting paid very well for very little work, that he would be so anti-bike. Heck, extra cash in my pocket makes me extremely lieable to the person giving me money! I'll be there in August for sure. I may be somewhere else at the end of July, but I want to come and try my hand against nelson! |
Title: Re: Horse Country TT Post by Kwijybow on Jun 27th, 2007, 9:31pm Awesomeness all around!! Looking forward to getting smoked by Greg in both July and August! :) Thanks a bunch for including us Kevin! |
Title: Re: Horse Country TT Post by DallasBikr on Jun 27th, 2007, 9:45pm Fair warning...we have to kick the price to $20 pre-reg/$25 day of to make it happen each month. Sponsor issues (i.e., we don't have enough that will give cash...). I'm told this is in line with pretty much everthing but the weekday crits... I will have 'bent medals through 5 places and door prizes again this time...as well as much smoother everything. Will probably start registration earlier and may even be able to send out your start times the night before! |
Title: Re: Horse Country TT Post by DallasBikr on Jun 29th, 2007, 8:34am We're on....online registration starts 7/5 12:01AM...time to get a team together if you like, or get an early start time by registering first! http://www.bikereg.com/events/register.asp?eventid=5043 |
Title: Re: Horse Country TT Post by DallasBikr on Jul 19th, 2007, 7:13am Hey guys...do any of your recumbents use standard 700c race wheels? We've got a "Fastest to the turn" prime of a set of ROL Volant Race wheels...$379 value for the first solo rider to get to the turnaround point at the July edition of the HCTT. I hear recumbents are fast....but are they "that" fast? :) Please go to http://www.ROLWheels.com and check them out. Title: Re: Horse Country TT Post by aikigreg on Jul 19th, 2007, 2:29pm Well, you know how I placed, so you know how fast bents can be - though that was definately an off day for me - I should have been much faster, and will be next time. I'm definately out for this month's TT - I'm on vacation. However, I'll be back for next month's for sure! |
Title: Re: Horse Country TT Post by Kwijybow on Jul 19th, 2007, 5:31pm Hi Kevin, currently I'm planning to be there, cool about the wheels, the outbound section looks like it should be to the bents advantage on paper. Just hope the engine can put in a performance. I need to start getting some specific training in. Take Care, Nelson. |
Title: Re: Horse Country TT Post by aikigreg on Jul 19th, 2007, 5:51pm Oh, and both my bents take 700CC in the back, so Go get em nelson! ;D |
Title: Re: Horse Country TT Post by DallasBikr on Jul 20th, 2007, 7:19am Very cool....save $5 and pre-register :) Did I see you in the B race Tuesday night Nelson? |
Title: Re: Horse Country TT Post by Kwijybow on Jul 20th, 2007, 7:36am Yes I applied for the upgrade and it came in earlier than expected. I had very low expectations for the race as I was still feeling the 400K quite a bit in the legs. The pace might have been a little higher, but things seemed pretty smooth. My legs were protesting quite a bit so I decided I had done enough about halfway through. I was glad to get the logistics out of the way, and next week should go better I hope. I was looking around for you in the C race, but didn't see you officiating until we started. I'm thinking I may ride the TT course a few times this Saturday morning. I'd like to see it. Take Care, Nelson. |
Title: Re: Horse Country TT Post by DallasBikr on Jul 20th, 2007, 8:16am I was in the C race, with the plan of dropping out with 5 to go so I could go put on my USAC officials shirt and score the finish. SO I attacked on my last lap and got a good 20 second gap :) NOBODY saw me as a threat! Then I pulled out. Maybe next week I attack again and make it stick, since I know I won;t be chased.... Practicing the TT course is a great idea. Start at the school. If you get to the construction area, you went too far :) If you don't pass a gas station with a dragster on the roof, you didn't go far enough! DB |
Title: Re: Horse Country TT Post by Kwijybow on Jul 21st, 2007, 1:04pm Road the the approximate course 3 times today, I agree very challenging for bents. I was looking at about 36 minutes, so I officially suck at time trials. I might have been faster on the Lemond on this one. I was doing the outbound leg in a shade over 16, so 19 something coming back. Definitely harder coming back. If anybody else shows up I'm toast! I saw alot of other riders, even some who seemed to be also practicing for the TT. Aubrey seems like a nice town. Take Care, Nelson. |
Title: Re: Horse Country TT Post by aikigreg on Jul 22nd, 2007, 9:20pm I think I was 32 minutes, so you don't suck that bad :). Give em hell, and We'll go head to head next month! Greg |
Title: Re: Horse Country TT Post by DallasBikr on Aug 13th, 2007, 12:53pm Men's open pre-registers: 6 Recumbents: 0 The DFs are winning the pre-reg battle! Pre-reg closes Thursday at midnight. Race is 8:30 am August 18!!!! :P DB |
Title: Re: Horse Country TT Post by Kwijybow on Aug 13th, 2007, 1:16pm Hey had me worried, but I went and looked and my pre-reg shows up. Definitely going to be there. Take Care, Nelson. |
Title: Re: Horse Country TT Post by DallasBikr on Aug 13th, 2007, 1:39pm Whoops!!! Sorry about that! I'm kinda dense today :) |
Title: Re: Horse Country TT - 2008 Post by DallasBikr on Dec 3rd, 2007, 1:21pm Hi guys, We decided last week that we will attempt to run the HCTT series again next year, and you 'benters will be welcomed/invited again :) Looking at March, May and July, depending on the TXBRA calendar. Need sponsors, so if you know any companies that want to hit the "38 year old, white, male, mid-manager/professional" demographic, please let me know Thanks! Kevin |
Title: Re: Horse Country TT Post by aikigreg on Dec 3rd, 2007, 6:32pm Will do, where I can! |

Title: Re: Horse Country TT Post by DallasBikr on Feb 1st, 2008, 2:57pm Hiya, Looks like the dates are pretty firm: March 22, May 10, July 12 If I can get three or more of you to commit to "Probably do it more than once", I'll put in the 'bent category again! You will be in the door prize drawing, but I may not be buying any medals this year. Still working out the prize lists for all categories.. Still looking for a title sponsor...that spot can be had for $1500 :) Thanks! |
Title: Re: Horse Country TT Post by Kwijybow on Feb 1st, 2008, 3:15pm Hi Kevin, Definitely planning on all 3 iterations! Take Care, Nelson. |
Title: Re: Horse Country TT Post by aikigreg on Feb 1st, 2008, 9:12pm March is iffy due to recvovery from surgery, but otherwise I'm in the other 2 dates. |
Title: Re: Horse Country TT Post by DallasBikr on Feb 1st, 2008, 9:27pm Just a reminder....you don't have to be FAST...time trials are all about improving YOUR time from one month to the next (for those of you on the fence...) Cost: $20 entry fee (pre-registration. $25 the day of) $10 for a one day license (needed each time) OR $60 for an annual USAC license Good chance at some door prizes...we get cool stuff from our sponsors! Title: Re: Horse Country TT Post by bikerteam on Feb 6th, 2008, 9:07am Is there a category for fat, over 50, under 10mph avg speed guys? What about a trike category? I'm eyeing another new bike; Maybe a V2K, or new M5 mid-racer... Actually I'll be at Hell Week from 3-15 / 3-22 or else I'd come and set a benchmark for you all. What about a hand cycle category for Greg? |
Title: Re: Horse Country TT Post by DallasBikr on Feb 6th, 2008, 9:21am :) All you 'benters go in the same place this year...gender, age, weight and number of wheels are all being ignored... Maybe I should get my disabled, over 40, trike riding, 6-8mph wife out there.... DB |

Title: Re: Horse Country TT Post by aikigreg on Mar 1st, 2008, 11:16pm Kevin, I'm going to try and come, but will be a last minute registrant I think, because I won't know until a week before if I will be cleared to ride at such an intense effort. Title: Re: Horse Country TT Post by Kwijybow on Mar 1st, 2008, 11:46pm Greg come on anyway, at least get a run in even if you can't go full speed to keep you in the running for the overall prize. Quick Healing! Nelson. |

Title: Re: Horse Country TT Post by DallasBikr on Mar 18th, 2008, 3:38pm Greg, I hope you can ride, but I don't want your fee enough for you to hurt/re-injure yourself. You could always come up and cheer for your teammates! For those that have not done a TT before there are a few basic rules: No drafting. Your jersey must have sleeves. Open course, so the shoulder is recommended, but not required Do not impede traffic that is passing you if you choose to ride in the traffic lane At the start, there will be a holder. His job is to hold you upright while you get clipped in and ready to go. The official will let you know 15 seconds before you start and then 5...4...3...2...1...go. The holder will release you, but will not push you so on go, you release the brakes and take off. If you are late for your start time, your time starts without you. Approach the finish line and announce "late starter", and then wait for instructions. Being late for your start is NOT a DQ. It just adds to your time. We are running everyone 30 seconds apart, so you might pass someone or be passed. give space between bikes so you don;t run afoul of the "no drafting" rule. All basic stuff. If you want to practice the "hold and release", we have a lot of concrete in the parking lot. Good idea if you've never done it before, just so you know what it feels like. John is a very good holder. that's it :) |

Well I'm loading and locking up the Giro on the back of the Prius. The Prius with a huge dent thanks to Ms Buick. It'll be too dark to ride up unfamiliar roads so I'm gonna drive up and test the road early so if anyone needs a lighted escort for warmups I should be there if my ankle holds up. I did a whopping mile tonight and gave a little sprint and no lingering affects. Maybe I didn't twist it so badly. Edit: Work up with a swollen ankle. Doesn't hurt at all but it is stiff so I stayed in bed till a few minutes ago. Hopefully i'll be all ready and can make a run at it next go around. |
Title: Re: Horse Country TT Post by DallasBikr on Apr 9th, 2008, 12:29pm HCTT is being allowed to continue with a few changes :) Big change: Shoulder only. Riding in the traffic lane is an automatic 30 second penalty... Small changes: Extended registration, more folks on course (I hope), and an Aubrey cop being hired. Nice thing is that you recumbent types follow the rules well....and we appreciate it! BikeReg will go live next week, once the altered flyer is approved. I'll pop a link in here at that time. Thanks, Kevin Unrelaetd: Nelson...you coming to the crits this year? B race avg was 25.5 last night (until I hit a pothole and flatted that is...) |

Title: Re: Horse Country TT Post by Kwijybow on Apr 9th, 2008, 11:57pm Sorry Kevin, Aubrey does know its shooting itself in the foot with the cycling community right? I was going to design a permanent through there, but I'm dropping that idea. On the Crits, I really was set to come out Tuesday, but the poor looking weather forecast had me deciding to ride the commuter with fenders in to work. Call me a wuss, but I hate the fenderless racing bike in the rain. I hope your flat didn't cause any pavement inspection. Take Care, Nelson. |

Not sure they care...since cyclists were blocking traffic all over town and up and down Hwy 428 instead of yielding. Like any town, the city council is going to listen to the loudest complainers...in this case the people whose way we got in. And they got nothing in return, since they don't charge a permit fee. We are making a donation to the Aubrey Library from the last race proceeds. The cycling community in Aubrey is about 10 people, and none of us ride together. 1 or 2 they don't care about. I'd love to email them and tell then about all the money I spend there and that this race is the reason why. If you can help me out Kevin I'll draft a form letter that everyone could send to them and let them know how many tourists they're missing out on 3x per year. |

Ummm....lets send a letter thanking the city for hosting the race instead of talking like they've cancelled it, which they have not. No email addresses are available....paper is very effective for this type of thing. I'll buy you a stamp if you like! Regarding the "we are traffic"...yes, as long as you are going no less than 10 mph under the speed limit. If you are in the non-shoulder lane at 30, and a car is waiting, you are impeding that car. This is the Denton County and City of Aubrey interpretation. And since they have sirens, guns and ticket books....its my interpretation as well :D Common sense...if there is a car behind you...move over. You guys have both common sense AND rear-view mirrors and have never been an issue. A few bad apples that act like the course is closed make for a lot of angry, vocal residents. Thanks, Kevin |
Title: Re: Horse Country TT Post by aikigreg on Apr 11th, 2008, 12:29pm That's what I meant Kevin - a nice friendly thanks for allowing a 100 tourists into their domain every month. |
Title: Re: Horse Country TT Post by Kwijybow on Apr 11th, 2008, 12:57pm I'm pretty sure that the impeding traffic thing would be a bust if I took them to court, regardless of their interpretation. I am a legal vehicle, there is no minimum posted speed. Since when did having guns make you right? I can't get too upset though, the car-centric world is going to be rocked on its heels in the next few years, so I'll just keep riding my bike and organizing my life in a car-free manner and help others do the same. All that said, I did see people not pulling over onto the shoulder, which seems like the neighborly thing to do, after all it is available, but I get plenty of people who yell at me to get off the road onto the sidewalk, or just out of there way in general so they can continue to exceed the speed limit by at least 10mph so I'm a bit sensitive on this subject. Take Care, Nelson. |
Title: Re: Horse Country TT Post by Kwijybow on Apr 11th, 2008, 1:36pm Hmm I feel I need to make my position (which is consistent with Texas Law) a little clearer. Basically I'm doing car drivers a favor by relinquishing the traffic lane to allow them to pass, but because I'm operating my legal vehicle (bicycle) in accordance with the law regarding it I am under no compulsion to do so. The car is free to pass me as soon as it is safe to do so and in a safe manner, but because they might have to slow down before passing is safe is not a valid reason to require me to not ride in the traffic lane. Now I'm put in the uncomfortable position of having to choose to condone their incorrect and illegal interpretation (disenfranchising my rights, and not recognizing the equality of my vehicle to a car) by my participation or choosing not to participate and help my friend's race and fundraising. I'm certainly not asking Kevin to fight that battle, but they are simply wrong. |
Title: Re: Horse Country TT Post by Kwijybow on Apr 11th, 2008, 1:53pm Ok just found something that relieves my dilemma a bit: (c) The local law enforcement agencies and the sponsoring organization may agree on safety regulations governing the movement of bicycles during a competitive race or during training for a competitive race, including the permission for bicycle operators to ride abreast. So they do have the ability to make this "interpretation" for the conditions of the race, they could not enforce it with the expectation that it would be upheld though if I were not participating in the competitive event. Take Care, Nelson. also will add info on the Selz decision which would likely prove highly relevant: http://cycledog.blogspot.com/2005/11/impeding-traffic-selz-decision.html and lastly this site is wonderful reading, especially why local authorities are not to be entrusted with local "interpretations" just because they have guns and ticket books. http://www.crankmail.com/Fred/Rt2Road.html |

Title: Re: Horse Country TT Post by DallasBikr on Apr 15th, 2008, 10:22am Yes, we sweep the shoulder/emergency lane before each event, but I cannot gaurantee we will get everything. I look at it from the "will this object make me crash or change my line" perspective. Dead animals go (yuck) Rocks bigger than a golfball go Shredded tires go Anything else I wouldn't want to hit as a racer goes. This takes 1-3 hours each month, depending on how much stuff there is. Pushing a broom twelve miles is part of promoting. I do have a number for TXDOT that is ging to try to get a sweeper out there a day or two beforehand. All that said, if a truck drops a load or there is fresh roadkill between 7pm Friday and 9am Saturday, we'll just have to dodge it. Greg...the date is may 10th...thanks for asking |

Title: Re: Horse Country TT Post by evblazer on May 3rd, 2008, 4:08pm Regarding the shoulder rule. It looks fine all the way through the course up to the last 200meters. If someone needs to pass me going up that hill can they use the right turn only lanes? The shoulder for the last 200 meters is 3ft or less. |

Glad you asked...there is a one-day license form that doubles as a waiver. Since it is a 3 part form, I can't put it on the web for you. There will be a table with them on it at the registration area. We should have a traffic director there to point you to them. Ask for the "one-day license." And yes, $10 cash please...no checks or credit cards are taken, except for purchasing an annual license ($60) which makes no sense for recumbent racers. Thanks for asking, DB |
Title: Re: Horse Country TT Post by aikigreg on May 8th, 2008, 1:28pm We can't be members of the organization though because we ride bents, which are illegal int he organization, yes? |
Title: Re: Horse Country TT Post by evblazer on May 8th, 2008, 1:38pm If there were 6+ events that allowed recumbents, legally usac or not, couldn't we we register as cat 5 road? I guess we could anyways if we wanted to have a neato # or something. |
Title: Re: Horse Country TT Post by Kwijybow on May 8th, 2008, 2:42pm Technically recumbents are not illegal, they just require a separate race category, which promoters are either unaware of/ or choose not to promote or include in their events. The license is for you, not your bike choice. Thanks Kevin for including us. Also by joing USAC for this race you automatically have a category (5 unless you have a annual license and have upgraded). Take Care, Nelson. |
Title: Re: Horse Country TT Post by DallasBikr on May 8th, 2008, 3:22pm Nelson has got it exactly right. The person is licensed, not the bike. Just like I can't race my track bike in a road event as is, a 'bent can't race against uprights (ya'll are just too fast...) but you can race each other. Same for tandems...they get their own category for the races where the promoters want to include them, such as the state time trials in Pattison. For Nelson, it makes sense to have an annual since he can race crits and maybe even track someday. For those that only do HCTT, 3 one days is the better deal. |
