Title: Texas Time Trials
Post by terranimo on May 9th, 2007, 4:54pm

With Greg talking up the Texas Time Trials I’m thinking about participating in it for the experience.   I looking at the 6 hour TT by myself of maybe teaming up with someone like TJ and splitting the 12 hour TT.  If anyone is interested, sometime in June I would like to car-pool over the TTT course and do a few 20 mile laps to check it out.  If I like the course I will certainly participate this fall!  Otherwise I will hang out and crew for riders.

I had been thinking of trying this, especially after picking up the Corsa.  I need to head on down there and ride since the course is only about 12/15 miles from the house.  Like you Terry, if I don't ride the 6 hour challenge I was gonna volunteer to help in anyway possible.  Greg, thanks for posting the link to the photos.

I was debating where to ride the day before the picnic. That might be a good day for a fast loop or three around this course. Then, slower recovery miles with Rose on Sunday would be in order.

Terry , Bud and whoever else, I live 3 miles south of the Burleson WalMart just off HWY 174.  Phone 817-235-8542.  I got the Corsa (2006 demo) from Kelvin @ Angletech.  I purchased my Rocket GL63 from him 9 years ago and have been real happy with it, so I guess I'm a loyal customer.  Including the shipping and various accouterments, I still paid less than what I could have walked out the door at Plano for just a stock model.  Not to dis Plano, but I like dealing with Kelvin.

One other thing, I talked to a guy a little bit ago here at work who lives very close the TTT route.  He said from all the oil field traffic going on out there in the county, the roads are starting to get pretty tore up.  It's probably a good idea to get some scouting rides along the route.

I drove the course a couple of months ago, and was alarmed not only with the roughness of the roads, but with the volume and speed of the truck traffic, too. Mark Metcalfe said it wasn't that bad last year, and that maybe I just caught it on a bad day, but I wanted to see it again before committing to riding anything there.

Yup.  I bought my wife's V-rex from him last year on consignment, with the same result.  When we had a couple problems with it he didn't blink an eye in replacing the components sight unseen.

All youse guys with da Corsas...
Perhaps you should call the team the "Corsa-irs".... ;)

Of course, it's not TOTALLY out of the question that I might be up for participating...  it just sounds like a brutal day on the bike, from what I've heard/read from my GDB pals.  On the other hand, one of my references is Brenda Barnell doing 500 miles in 44 hours...

I was talking to Ray Torrey Today, we're planning on participating on a 4 man 500 mile team at the moment, but he mentioned how cool it would be to have a 4 man Recumbent 500 mile team.  Last year Ray and I rode the 12Hour as a 2 man team.  Truck traffic wasn't that bad, and the road is the same for everybody.  The course is tough for recumbents as it is definitely not flat.  That said the recumbents did well last year setting several new records.  The conditions can be quite brutal, we had very high winds last year that made the going tough, and reversed direction midway.  Its a great experience, and a great bunch of people.  One thing I recommend from our experience is to definitely do only one lap between relays.  Ray and I pulled a couple of 2 lappers, and our 2nd lap times we're pretty slow.  I've ridden this course just last month as part of the LSR 300K Brevet and it seemed about the same as I remember, and the night time traffic was non-existent.

Take Care,
Nelson.

Hello everyone.  My name is Ray Torrey.  I joined rbent today.  I ride a Bacchetta (Ti) Aero.  I'm currently recoving from reconstructive knee surgery, though I've had a successful racing career, mostly on DF bikes.  Last year, Nelson Ralls and I rode the 2-man 12 hour TTTT and covered 200 miles in a little less than 12 hours.  I will be back to 100% strength by July.

This year we would like to assemble a 4 man, 500 mile team.  If the team members ride equal distance, that would be 125 miles per rider, as the course is 20 miles in length, with an altitude gain of approximately 1000 feet.  If the team rode one lap each, then each team member would have at least a 3 hour rest between pulls.

The chip seal surface is no worse than any other.  As a matter of fact, about half the course is fairly smooth chip seal. There is a short stretch of the course where last year there was some construction vehicles, but as far as I know, none of the racers had any traffic issues.

The good news is that every rider who rides the 500 mile course receives a very nice trophy, regarless of the place they come in.

After this months 600k Brevet, Nelson and I will begin speed work, which will include training on the course.  Please let us know if you are interested in joining us for this extremely enjoyable and fulfilling event.

You can call me at 817-975-8638, or e-mail at ray.torrey@verizon.com.

Regards

Ray Torrey

What's the possibility of getting a crew together to ride the course for at least three laps on a day over Memorial Day weekend?  I can't do Sunday, but should be able to Saturday or Monday...  early morning start, to get 'er done?

When's that next "populaire" you mentioned?  OH, I see it's Saturday the 26th...   Would it be worth attempting to get together on Monday?

I hadn't realized that weekend was Memorial Day weekend. I think that Monday morning would work for me.

Thanks guys for the warm welcome.  Greg & Bud I certainly remember meeting you and watching you ride into the distance while my surgical recovery becons my big ego to mash the pedals in pain until I cry.  But, I degress...

Here is the link to the Lone Start Randonneuring web.  On the left hand side of the screen you will see "2007 Brevet Schedule".
http://lonestarrandon.tripod.com/
You will notice that on June 3, 10, 17 that there are Populaires of increasing distance (101k, 128k, 163k). Populaires are designed to attract newbies to the awesome sport of Randonneuring.  There are a lot of cool awards (ie, medals) for various achievements.  If anyone has any questions about the sport, feel free to call my cell anytime (817-975-8638)

Personally, I can't ride over the Memorial Day Weekend.  I'm taking my wife on a 3 day get-a-way to honor her for supporting my cycling, as I have participated in a Randonneuring event practically every Saturday for the past 12 months.

If you guys (and gals too) decide to ride the TTTT course, could you please drop me a personal e-mail as well as I don't know where on the rbent forum to look for ride postings yet. The best place to meet is where the actual TTTT starts, which is New Hope Baptist church.  My e-mail address is  "ray.torrey@verizon.com".

Ray,

I empathize with your knee problems. Fortunately for me, my knees seem to be among the few good bone joints I have left. I try to keep a fairly high cadence all the time on my bike to keep my knees working. Long distance riding on hilly courses like all the brevets around here seem to be, sure doesn't make it any easier on knees, though, especially on a recumbent. I'd really like to make my first 200k a little less hilly than all the upcoming brevets I'm seeing.

We post planned rides in the Upcoming Rides section. But, before we post the TTTT course test ride, we should probably decide what time to start. I know Greg likes to sleep in, but I'd rather get up at dark-thirty, and start the ride at 7:00 am. Paul is probably the one driving from the furthest, so maybe we need to make him ride leader for this one, and let him set the starting time. I think we should do the first lap for time (while we're fresh, just so each of us can see where he is right now), then ride together after that, but I'll go along with whatever the group wants to do.

Sounds fine, except I'd feel more comfortable taking the first lap together and slow to check for hazards and get the lay of the land.  We can use it as a warmup.  I don't want to be surprised by a patch of gravel or a curve,

Bud/Greg - if you go back at a later date, please let Nelson and I know.  We are going to race in the TTTT again this year, but would like two other "performance caliber" recumbent riders to join us in the 500 mile race.  If not, we'll join up with a couple DF racers.  Our lap times in the 12 hour race averaged from slightly over one hour to approximately 1:15 (as the race wore on).

If you start at New Hope church, be aware that the start location is the lowest elevation.  You slowly climb out of the church, then hit a relatively long climb (1 mile long?); I'm guessing around mile 3 or mile 4 as you pass the plant.  The back side of the course has a series of 3 or 4 rollers, then about a mile before the church you have a very nice/fast descent back to the church where you should be able to easily reach and maintain 30mph.

Yes I would definitely be interested later, but this time I think even if I could contemplate getting back on the bike the day after the 600K my wife would shoot me, if I left to go ride that morning.  The descent back to the Church is very cool on a recumbent.  I was hitting 40+mph before the wind picked up and blew me around too much, but even then mid 30's.  My slowest speeds were actually at the crest of the rollers on the back side.  The front side climb is shallow enough that I usually stayed in the high teens.  Without wind its not too hard to knock out 20mph laps, and then the fatigue factor kicks in later as well.  After the connector to the back side of the course where the rollers are is where I think the worst pavement is.  I actually believe there were a few potholes there, as well there was an ugly hole I hit the first lap despite it being marked just before the plant on the front side.  This year I have my lighting mounted lower and will hopefully pick those up sooner, plus i also know where they are now.  Also if you ride it in the Dark the connector road lacked road markings, but fortunately(?) is narrow enough that I could see the bushes and trees as delimeters during the night portion.

Bud don't let the upcoming hills bother you too much at the Brevets, I actually enjoyed the climbs as a break on the 400K, just shift in to the small front and spin up.  I've climbed Cherry Pie Hill on my corsa, and did its twin Apple Pie Hill on the 400K and although I saw some 4-5mph numbers occaisionally I never actually strained all that hard.  I have a 34/32 on the Corsa that I deem sufficient for anything I'm able to ride.  Lower than 3mph or so I may as well walk anyway.

Have fun, sorry I can't come!

Take Care,
Nelson.

START the ride at 7AM???  How far are we going???   ;D

Monday should work for me.   Compromise -- 7:30 start...  It takes me an hour and a half to get to Cleburne, and Terrie has an Orpheus Chamber Singers concert on Sunday night...  And I like the idea of 1st lap being "exploring/warmup", then 2nd lap harder...  especially climbing right away...

My cellphone is 214 923 9551  -- let's do it!   I'll start a thread in Upcoming Rides.
