Pactour Southern Transcon

San Diego to Dog Beach and back
9/9/17
This is the ride out to the beach to dip our front wheel into the Pacific Ocean. However, there was a hundred yards of sand to cross and we decided the wheel dip would have to be symbolic. No way we were going to wheel the bikes through that much sand!

San Diego to Julian
9/10/17
The first official day of the tour and for some reason we were expecting somewhat flat riding for the first 30 miles. Well, nothing was further from the truth! We had plenty of 9% climbs in that first 30 miles and practically none of it was flat - it was either up or down. That of course continued for the first 60 miles or so and as we got into the mountains, it was a lot more up than down. But once we got to the lunch stop at Mt Laguna, we had 1500 ft of descent with a few uphill bumps along the way. The descents were mostly straight or easy curves so I was able to let it go and not touch the brakes. Max speed was only 39 but it was exhilerating speed! Heat was not a big issue because we had some cloud cover at times and then we got up into the higher elevations where it was naturally cooler. So a good day despite all that climbing!

Julian to El Centro
9/11/17
At the start of the ride we rode from the pines at over 4000 ft to the spines (cactus) at under 1000 ft in the first 20 miles. We continued to descend with a few bumps along the way, giving us over 1400 ft of climbing. With the avg temperature for the ride at just under 100 degrees, everyone suffered in the heat, myself included. However I suffered less than most meaning no cramping during the ride. I just found the heat to be ultra oppressive with a hot wind and ultra hot temperature to ride some 60 miles out of the 86 we did in a high level of heat. As they say, it is dry heat but at some point it is just as dangerous as heat and humidity! Between Julian where we started at El Centro where we finished we passed through Ocotillo Wells and Plaster City - not much out there - just Ocotillo cactus and cholla cactus and those towns in name only as hardly anyone lives there.

El Centro to Blythe
9/12/17
Day 3, Pac Tour Southern, El Centro to Blythe, last day in California: this was a 103 mile day that was to be significantly hot for most of it. I was intimidated and with good reason. I was increasingly nauseous as the ride progressed. I couldn't eat lunch. Fortunately by the time I finished that feeling had passed. It was a little cooler today - only 115! Had 1900 ft of climbing while crossing the Imperial Dunes and the miles of rollers after that. This ride put me over 9000 miles for the year!

Blythe CA to Wickenburg AZ
9/13/17
Day 4 of the Pac Tour Southern: we left California this morning and headed for Wickenburg AZ, 116 miles from Blythe. We climbed over 2 mountain ranges, each followed by very nice downhill runs. Sometimes we had a headwind or crosswind. But for the downhill, we had some strong tailwind! There was 3400 ft of climbing in total but it wasn't that easy. The temperature topped at 115. But thanks to some cooler air toward the end, and cloud shade at times, conditions improved. It was still 95 at the end but I felt better by then than I had the previous 2 days.

Wickenburg to Cottonwood
9/14/17
Day 5, Pac Tour Southern Transcon: Wickenburg to Cottonwood - another Century done and this one with 8000 ft of climbing! We crossed 3 mountain ranges - the first one up to 4700 ft, the second up to 6100 ft and the 3rd up to 7000 ft. There were great, fast descents after each. I hit 46 mph on the last descent. I would have gone faster if I'd let it go longer. 46 was fast enough. Along the way we passed through Prescott and Jerome. Jerome was especially interesting but unfortunately no time to explore. Most importantly, no heat to contend with. It was a gloriously cool day. I finally was able to upload more Garmin data - Tuesday's high temperature was 117 with an ending temp in Blythe, of 111. Wednesday's high temperature was 115 with an ending temp of 95. No wonder I was dealing with heat related issues!

Cottonwood to Winslow
9/15/17
Day 6, Pac Tour Southern Transcon: Cottonwood to Winslow - the ride started with miles of climbing accompanied by fierce crosswind and headwind and gradients as high as 10%! After the long stretch of climbing there were several stretches of steep intermittent climbs with intervening descents. Finally, in our last 30 miles, we had nearly continuous descending with most of the gradient in the 1 to 2% range and a strong tailwind! We cruised for miles at 30+ mph. It was a fantastic way to end a long climbing day!

Winslow to Springerville
9/16/17
Day 7, Pac Tour Southern Transcon: We rode across high desert and experienced headwind, crosswind, and tailwind at various times. The entire ride trended uphill with no big climbs, just steady climbing and easy gradient for the first 100 miles. We skirted the Petrified Forest but had no time to go there. I've been there before, on the bike. The last 20 miles, though, were big rollers, more challenging climbing, rough pavement, and headwind!

Springerville AZ to Socorro NM
9/17/17
Day 8, Pac Tour Southern Transcon: This was slated to be a very tough day as the distance to be cycled was 155 miles! This called for leaving early, keeping the breaks short, and picking up the pace. So James and I were on the road about 45 min earlier than usual. I rode solo as James was nursing a sore knee. There were 5 sag stops, a lunch stop, the state line, Continental Divide, the Very Large Array, and highest elevation for the entire trip. These were all the places I stopped plus a couple random photo ops. I kept the stops very short to make sure I made the various time cutoffs. The very high desert scenery out there was beautiful - yellow and violet wild flowers were blooming as we maintained elevation above 7000 feet for most of the ride. The starting temp was low 40s, dipping into the upper 30s early on. It stayed cool all day with the usual assortment of headwind, crosswind, and tailwind. It even rained in Socorro just before I got there. So, a long day done successfully. Looking forward to a shorter day tomorrow!

Socorro to Ruidoso
9/18/17
Day 9, Pac Tour Southern Transcon: This was a relatively easy day, apart from headwind on the climbs. But we had only done half the climbing by mile 85 of a 105 mile day. That would change just as soon as we started the climb to Ruidoso on NM 37. We were looking ahead as the road rose up apparently steeply in the distance. There was no apparent about it - it was really steep. We climbed for about a mile and the gradient was generally in the 7 to 8% range. But there were parts that touched 9, 10, and 11%. I was surprised I could do it all without needing to put a foot down. After the long initial hill there were several rollers that were also very steep. All these steep hills doubled our climbing in the last 15 miles! We ended up with 105 miles and about 6100 ft of climbing!

Ruidoso to Roswell
9/19/17
Day 10, Pac Tour Southern Transcon: Today was what I would call a recovery day. Leaving Ruidoso, we had some steep climbs (as steep as 12%) and very fast descents but with significant crosswind, until mile 24. After that, the road turned east and we had an incredible tailwind as the road trended downhill, eventually dropping 3500 ft. I rode for long stretches at over 40 mph - fast enough to fly down one side of a roller, bottom out, and without pedalling, coast up the next hill and over with 20 mph still showing on the Garmin. What an amazing day! After 47 miles, we had some easy climbs as the road began to shift to a southeasterly direction, giving us more of a crosswind but we were still able to use that to advantage. As we came into Roswell, we enjoyed smooth pavement all the way to our hotel. So, 97 miles, 3000 ft of climbing, a good avg speed. We didn't work very hard on this one, so definitely a recovery ride!

Roswell to Clovis
9/20/17
Day 11, Pac Tour Southern Transcon: This was the first full day out of the mountains and the last full day in New Mexico. We covered about 100 miles out of a total of 109 on the shoulder of a freeway, US 70. Fortunately most of that was decent pavement. There wasn't much of interest about the scenery so consquently not many photos were taken. It was also hot, topping out about 96, today. Our climbing of 1800+ feet was mostly from gradual inclines. However, we got 900 feet of climbing in the first 23 miles.

Clovis NM to Amarillo TX
9/21/17
Day 12, Pac Tour Southern Transcon: Back in Texas at mile 8, we arrived in Amarillo after nearly 111 miles and the highest avg of the trip so far - 20.8 mph. We had an awesome tailwind allowing us to cruise at anywhere from 22 to 32 mph for the most part. Today I topped 10000 miles for the year, over 1600 miles for the month so far, 58000 ft of climbing for the month, and 256000 ft of climbing for the year so far. Today was the easiest day of the tour - our vacation within a riding vacation! We followed US 60 which in turn followed a busy railway line - freight trains galore in each direction. We travelled through Hereford Texas, self proclaimed as the beef capital of the US (if not the world) and as evidence we saw feed lots alongside the road with hundreds of cattle being fattened up (fortunately we were upwind!). There were enormous grain elevators along the road and in the towns we passed through - all I would say are the epitome of agraian Texas - ranches and support in terms of hay and grains. However, the predominant smell was of cow manure, not hay or grains just as in some parts of Texas the smell hanging in the air is oil! Either way, it becomes obvious what the regional industry is all about. It was hot, too, above average for this time of year but not nearly as bothersome as the heat of southeastern California or western Arizona. Or, maybe I'm just getting used to the heat. In any case, hope the heat moderates in the coming days. There is much more to look forward to during this epic ride as we still have 15 days left - looking forward to it!

Amarillo to Shamrock
9/22/17
Day 13, Pac Tour Southern Transcon: Today, our last full day in Texas, we rode 93 miles. We mostly had a crosswind. The ride today wasn't as easy as yesterday, but it was still an easy day, despite the crosswind. In the span of 93 miles, we watched the landscape change from a flat, treeless plain to rolling hills with abundant trees. Our lunch stop was in McLean and while there, we visited the Barbed Wire Museum. That was all about barbed wire and many other things - very interesting. Wished I'd had more time. Climbing was about 1200 feet today. That number will grow as we traverse Oklahoma.

Shamrock TX to Weatherford OK
9/23/17
Day 14, Pac Tour Southern Transcon: Today we had mostly headwind and crosswind with mild temperature. The wind actually felt good most of the time as it felt nice and cool. We crossed into Oklahoma at mile 14.9 but there was no stateline sign. I took a picture of a highway sign as it showed Oklahoma and an outline of the state. That was 5 miles after the stateline. We were on Route 66 virtually the entire day. Oklahoma has the most miles of any state of driveable, intact sections of Route 66 (over 400 miles). We rode through Elk City for our lunch stop. It's a nice clean prosperous looking city. Pavement was nice and debris free. There are also Route 66 Museums there but we didn't visit them. In Clinton OK we had a sag stop next to another Route 66 museum and we did spend about an hour there and I took photos inside. That was another nice town. We ended the day with some bigger rollers than we had encountered earlier in the day, but the entire day was roller after roller, for the most part. We are now in Weatherford OK, another nice town. These towns are much more prosperous looking than the small towns we encounter within 25 miles of the boundary with North Texas so it has been pleasant riding in Oklahoma!

I was doing more or less fine (picked up a tonne of KOMs too)  until my numbers crashed in Roswell and I had to go home and have a marrow biopsy ..    I'll get the results next week and rejoin the tour as soon as I can (presuming I'm back to normal numbers wise and theyv'e been going up since I came down out of the mountains)

I second that regarding Doug - he has been missed! I didn't post anything about Doug as I felt it needed to come from him. Glad he's on here and giving the scoop!

Weatherford to Purcell
9/24/17
Day 15, Pac Tour Southern Transcon: In the last 4 days, we've had net elevation loss of over 2800 ft. Yet today, we climbed 4700 ft with a net loss of 525 ft in 111 miles. We never noticed the net loss - it all felt like climbing. The nature of the climbing was a continuation of yesterday's - rollers. Today's were bigger, steeper, and more numerous. We also had a strong south wind and much of our route took us south. That combined with the steep rollers, some as steep as 11% made for a wearing day. We had mostly cloudy conditions and there was noticeable humidity for the first time on the trip, today. I employed my 'roller technique' for making the best of conquering the rollers. I would fly down the descents on my aerobars and when reaching the upside of the next one, I would pedal furiously while still in the big ring and gradually shift down on the back without taking it off the big ring. Most of the time, this technique succeeded and I climbed rapidly without straining or shifting to the small ring. Occasionally, on very long climbs I did shift to the small ring. This didn't happen very often. It helped me keep up with James and use less energy. Tomorrow will be more of the same.

Day 16, Pac Tour Southern Transcon: same as yesterday - In the last 5 days, we've had net elevation loss of over 3000 ft. Yet today, we climbed 4100 ft with a net loss of 239 ft in 113 miles. We never noticed the net loss - it all felt like climbing. The nature of the climbing was a continuation of yesterday's - rollers. Today's were easier than yesterday's. Our south wind was less strong, as well. The trees are very numerous now - much of what we saw was thick forest of hardwoods - not much in the way of open land in non-populated areas. This shift from treeless plains to forests took place in a relatively short stretch - 3 days, 300 miles. We are now in the part of Oklahoma influenced by the Gulf of Mexico. We are essentially straight north of Dallas, as well. Humidity is up and the trees and grasses look well watered. Tomorrow will be the most challenging day since Ruidoso - probably more challenging than that day!

McAlester OK to Queen Wilhelmina Lodge AR
9/26/17
Day 17, Pac Tour Southern Transcon: Today was more about % grade than climbing, at least for me. For that reason, I consider this to be the toughest day of the tour. The first day of the tour, for me, is the second toughest. From about mile 59 to mile 98.9, we had gradients ranging up to 16%. There were miles of gradients 11 to 15%. There is a 3.5 mile climb with gradients ranging from 7% to 14%. Likewise, there were steep descents. I would let it go, not touching the brakes, and reached my highest speed of the trip - 48.6. By virtue of the steep climbs, my lowest speed of the trip also occurred today - 3.9 mph. Some stick insects crossing the road provided minor distraction. Even saw a fuzzy catterpillar crossing the road. Saw numerous catterpillars in New Mexico but this one was the first this far east. Saw the first log truck of the trip and very dense forests of hardwood and pine. The road in the Ouachita Mountains was nice until about the last 9 miles in Oklahoma. Then it became boulder seal! Once we crossed into Arkansas, though, it smoothed out, again. Our highest elevation reached today was 2678 feet. The Ouachita Mountains are the highest in middle America and have no connection to the Rockies or the Appalachians. Our elevation, right now, at the Queen Wilhelmena Lodge, is our highest for the rest of the trip. Tomorrow we descend about 2000 feet!

Day 18, Pac Tour Southern Transcon: A day after the toughest day of the tour, I was somewhat wasted. My 'get up and go done got up and went.' I got it done today but with none of the usual flair. All the climbs were an ordeal and we had plenty of tough ones, 3 or 4 of them again reaching that ignominious 11%! That level of steepness is getting old. On the bright side, there was rain in the area today, but not on us. For the second time on the tour, it rained on the fast guys. One of them said we should have been either faster or slower. James was grinning from ear to ear as we speculated that it rained on the fast guys! Beautiful morning in the mountains today and not chilly. We had probably a dozen climbs after leaving the hotel before the long descent into Mena. Then it flattened out for awhile before more mountainous adventures took place, adventures being those ridiculous climbs. Fortunately, there was no significant wind. Scenery was nice but it was mostly close in forest on either side of the road. We passed some logging operations in the hardwood forest and a logging truck being loaded. But no full logging trucks passed us - only empty ones. Again, not much in the way of photos - a few in the mountains is about it. Very glad it was just around 100 miles today, not bloody 118!

This morning the Garmin decided to switch to Indoor Training, without telling me. I got 1.6 miles down the road when I noticed the mileage was not recording. I stopped the Garmin, noticed "Indoor Training" and switched it back to "Race" - restarted the Garmin and all was well, but that kind of thing is very annoying. The Garmin will switch screens with no apparent input from me. Hate that.

Reminds me of my toughest ride ever, across the MO Ozarks. 200+ miles of one after the other 8%-22% grades. Never able to get enough momentum to ride up the next steep hill. 50 miles seemed like 150! The next hardest was AR. Taller hills, but not as often. It sure seemed to me they were just as often though. Both trips wore me out!

I hate anything Garmin!

I've ridden across Missouri back in 1999 - roller after roller, at least 10% and the weather so hot the tarmac was melting making our tires stick to the pavement That didn't improve our ability to get up those hills! Each day in Missouri was misery, about 130 miles each day and 8000+ feet of climbing each day as well!

Arkadelphia to Monticello
9/28/17
Day 19: Our ride today was comparatively easy. We had less climbing, nicer roads, and seemed flatter than the total climbing turned out to be. We did have a headwind but that didn't come into play much until the last 10 miles or so. There were loads of log trucks on the road. Fortunately, none of those drivers were recklessly coming too close, plus the roads had good shoulders, giving us the opportunity to stay farther away from the main lane. We had a dry cool front come through overnight, switching our wind to NE and then East for the riding. The humidity dropped quite a bit as a result making for a sunny, low humidity day!

When I rode coast to coast across Missouri, We had 22 rollers in one day and they were too far apart to get any kind of rhythm.

That was my experience too. I only rode about 60 miles a day. I was carrying way to much gear, about 60 pounds. Ha. By about the 3rd day, I left about 25 pounds in the trash! Each day after I left more weight behind until I only had around 20 pounds.extra.

Enjoy the rest of your tour. I hope the roads have improved in MS since I road there.

Monticello AR to Indianola MS
9/29/17
Day 20, Pac Tour Southern Transcon: On paper, it looked like an easy day. Practically no climbing, 108 miles. Reality: a mother of a headwind - changed everything! Highlight: crossed the Mississippi River! The bridge accounted for a third of our climbing for the day. We left the forest in Arkansas by the first 15 miles. After that, it was all agricultural land, flat as a pancake. The only crop was cotton. We had about 45 miles of that when we reached the Mississippi River levy and saw the bridge for the first time. It's a new bridge with a nice wide bike lane on either side. We took photos from the bridge, then descended into Mississippi (no state sign). Most of our roads in SE Arkansas were exceedingly rough - kind of like riding a rumble strip - terrible. Mississippi was no better - unbelievably rough roads and by then the headwind was stronger as well. Still in cotton country - wide open flat land with nothing to break the wind! Didn't seem like we'd ever finish as we were cruising at 12 to 15 mph for much of it. Cruising is not the right word - clawing our way forward is more descriptive of out effort. We did of course finally reach Indianola, our destination with 108.4 mles, a 14.8 avg, and 600 ft of climbing!

Day 21, Pac Tour Southern Transcon: This was the easy day we expected yesterday! We had pleasant temperatures, good roads, light traffic, and easy climbs. The scenery was good both in the first half of the ride, which was flat and the second half of the ride, which was hilly. Other than the first climb, which was 10%, all the other climbs were easy and doable in the big ring. Didn't break a sweat on most of them. We had possible alligator sightings in a lake we passed, although it was too far to confirm. Total miles for Pac Tour in September was 2241. Total mileage for the month was 2543 and total climbing for the month was over 87000. This is the best September I've ever had and mileage for the month is the best month I've had since July 1999 when I did my first transcon and had 3146 miles for that month.

Kosciusko MS to Livingston AL
10/1/17
Day 22, Pac Tour Southern Transcon: Today was our 6th longest day and 6th highest climbing total for the trip. (The second longest day will be tomorrow.) We did nearly 115 miles today with nearly 5200 ft of climbing. At mile 102, we crossed into Alabama. This is a new state for me in terms of cycling. I'd been to Alabama before but had never cycled in the state, before. This brings my "cycled in" state count to 38. There was no "state line sign" welcoming us to Alabama nor even an indication we were passing into a new state. The only give away was that we were told the road would become rougher, and it did! Shortly after, though, we turned onto another road which was nice and smooth. There was no difference in foliage - pine forest rules in each state!

Livingston to Greenville
10/2/17
Day 23, Pac Tour Southern Transcon: Today was one of the hardest days of the trip, so far. It was the second longest ride of the trip at 127 miles and hilly with over 4200 feet of climbing, most of which was in the second half of the ride. Also, we had a persistent strong headwind for almost all of it. The headwind made it an ordeal. Very steep climbs at the end added insult to injury as I was pretty much wiped out by then due to the headwind and constant climbing. Those steep ones at the end really challenged my ability to climb, as tired as I was. But climb I did - I don't give up easily, and today I didn't give up. The next 3 days may be equally as difficult - the east wind is predicted to be with us each day. We are getting down to the end but there seems to be no let up in challenging days.

Day 24, Pac Tour Southern Transcon: Flags at half-staff - assuming due to Las Vegas shootings? Anyway, today was easier because I took it easier. Still strong headwind and 4900+ ft of climbing in 110 miles. This was day 24, Greenville to Eufala, last day in Alabama on the PAC TOUR SOUTHERN TRANSCON. We've got 3 days left, about 320 miles and about 6500 more feet of climbing. The headwind is expected to stay with us to the end - no rest for the weary as they say! Alabama has been a beautiful state. Tomorrow we'll see what Georgia has in store for us!

DAY 25, EUFALA AL TO CORDELE GA, PAC TOUR SOUTHERN TRANSCON: This was another day of strong east wind. It was a 12 mph forecast wind but the flags were stretched out taut! 12 my behind! It was more like 24! There were some beautiful views in Georgia and I didn't hesitate to stop and take pictures. The distance was 116 miles, 3900 ft of climbing. Most of the climbing was done by mile 82 (lunch) so then it was just the headwind and that was enough.

I know the Cordele area very well. I was born about 90 miles to the east/NE in Vidalia. I picked cotton, tobacco, watermelons, and peaches every summer until 1968 all through that part of GA. Great job riding so far. The roads will flatten out for you soon, but the winds should pick up the closer to the ocean you get.

We went right through Vidalia on the way to Metter. That's where we turned off of US 280 onto a quieter road for the remaining miles to Metter!

DAY 26, PAC TOUR SOUTHERN TRANSCON, CORDELE TO METTER, GA is in the book - all done with this, the 2nd to last day, 115 miles, 3400 ft of climbing! Most of the miles took place on US 280, a narrow, busy with trucks, narrow to non-existent shoulder, roadway that everyone detested! It did get better toward the end as we were on different roads by mile 80 but no one is saying they enjoyed this one!

I know those roads very well. I would not like riding a bike along there with all the logging trucks. Are you going to end up around Savannah, GA? That is where I went to high school and college. Very neat city.

That day we passed through Vidalia was not a fun day - log trucks, rock haulers, long haul semis: those were 90% of the traffic and it was not pleasant riding as the shoulder was a rumble strip and we had to ride the white line or just to the left. It was a very stressful 115 miles! But thankfully, no one was killed, injured, or had accidents of any kind. WHEW!

PAC TOUR SOUTHERN TRANSCON, METTER GA TO TYBEE ISLAND GA, DAY 27 (the finale!): I've had a saddle sore since the Texas Panhandle. Part of me thought of nothing else than this last day - an end to the agony. Fortunately there is so much more positive to completing a tour like this than what in the final analysis amounts to minor discomfort. This was a great trip! The people and crew on the trip make it great as does the organization and highlights of the passing scenery. It was challenging and yet satisfying! We left Metter long after the other riders had left. We thought, no problem, we always catch some of the riders. Today, with 24 miles to the first sag, I had a flat at mile 23, my 4th of the trip. By the time we got to the sag, she was closing shop. No one else was around. We needed to be at the next sag, 18 miles away, by 10:00. With our initial slow pace and late arrival, there was no way we'd make that time. Arrived at sag 2 at 10:30 expecting no one to be there. But there they were! Needed to be at lunch, 16 miles down the road by 11:30. I thought, no way, that's possible. We made it despite what felt like a massive headwind! It was 11:29:30. We had made up loads of time! But there was still work to do. We had to be at mile 82 by 1:15 PM and we had to get through Savannah with all those traffic lights. I thought, no chance. But we made many of the lights on green and skirted long lines of waiting cars by splitting the lane between them and the parked cars. After awhile we reached the causeway which starts with a 7.3% climb across a channel to a barrier island and a very strong headwind. Finally, we saw riders ahead and knew we would make it. About then, it started to rain. We got wet but it didn't matter. The coolness was refreshing. Finally we made the regroup point after a somewhat harrowing ride on the causeway with car after car whizzing by. We all rode as a group to the Tybee Island Beach where we trekked across the sand and dipped our wheels and enjoyed the warm water swirling around our ankles. Day was done and trip was done! Today, 86 miles and 900 ft of climbing!  Total trip mileage was 2910; total trip climbing was 103006 ft. I rode every mile and climbed every climb!

Great job! Pretty cool the whole group rode to Tybee together. Did you guys ride down Victory Drive, Hwy-80, through Savannah to Thunderbolt? If you turned right off Victory Dr. in Thunderbolt at River Dr., I lived in the 8th house on the right, across from the Marina. I hope you got to enjoy the beauty along the way. I know it had to be a little nerve racking with the traffic. I use to ride my old trusty 10 speed from Thunderbolt, around Wilmington Island, to Tybee and back. Seems there was a mean dog about every 10 houses! Helped motivate a fast pace! Smiley

Enjoyed following along on your ride. You deserve a break now. Enjoy the sites and great seafood.
