Basecamp Helmet Review
Jul 17th, 2017, 9:44pm

Okay I have been wearing a Giro Air Attack Shield for about 4 years now and it's the best helmet I've ever had however Jay recently bought a cheapie helmet that looks like a Giro knockoff and really liked it so I did the same thing

Here's the helmet, looks almost exactly like my Giro

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0731LNRJ3/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o08_s00?ie=UT F8&psc=1

Grand total $32.97 so it can't compare to a $200 Giro right? well yes it actually can...

The fit and finish isn't quite as good as the Giro, maybe 95% there and it's not uncomfortable on my large lizard head

Ratchet is a large round knob that's actually easier to adjust than the Giro AND on occasion while riding with the Giro I had to push it forward but never had to do that to the Basecamp

Front shield held onto the helmet by 3 magnets which appear to be much more powerful than the Giro but the magnets rattle if you move the shield around, this isn't an issue during the ride

Front shield is larger than the Giro's and the view is GLORIOUS! Maybe because its new and not scratched up yet but I was impressed, slight optical distortion around the nose area but you don't notice it while riding, thought it might touch my nose which would be annoying but it never did

Shields are about $18 compared to the Giro's $40, I even tried mounting the Basecamp shield on the Giro but the magnet polarity is reversed and they repel each other, bummer Sad

Not bad for $33 bux

The magnets can be removed ..   I've had them pop out of the Giro before .. they are in with some kind of glue ..  I suspect hosing them down with benzene,  xylene or something else that likes adhesives will make them come out with a little working; then flip them around and glue back into place.

Nice looking.  After checking it out it also appears there is a more open design similar to a conventional road type lid withthe shield as well.  Price point in in the $39 range

Apparently the 1st generation Giro shields did that and Giro did a swap with ones that were supposedly fixed, I had one on the right side pop out while riding and fortunately I saved the pieces and glued them back together with no problems, still using that shield.

I've never had a problem with needing a more open design, I've ridden the Giro in +100 degree weather and never felt hot in fact it worked better than my previous open air Giro, might be because it provides more shade?

Basecamp also makes a shield that integrates in the shell and apparently pulls back inside the helmet although I can't find them for sale in the US, looks interesting but might be fragile

I have the red version of that helmet. I like the fact it doesn't slide down and let the shield ride on my nose, like my three GIRO Air Attack Shield helmets do. Very comfortable helmet with some nice features. A real bargain at $40. These are not "one size fits all" helmets, so when ordering them off Amazon, pay attention to the head diameter range listed under the helmet description.

I'm going to order more of them in different colors. I could order six of them and the total dollar amount would still be less than what I paid for my first Air Attack Shield helmet.

I bought one of those last fall. I really like it when riding the WAW. Like most helmets, the flames (or what ever that sticking out back part of most bicycle helmets is called) on the back of my Lazer Genesis stuck back so they hit the back of the WAW cockpit. This helmet works well.

However, I found that on my other bikes, I still like that DaBrim visor on my Genesis (and now new Lazer O2) better than a face shield.

Lately I've been part of the no helmet crowd, because I'm on  3 wheels now. But I need a comfy helmet for paid and group rides. I always liked the Giro, but why do they want so much for It? This does look like a reasonable alternative. I will also get the yellow shield for those early morning late evening or cloudy days. Much more in my price range.

Now the silly question, where exactly would one measure ones cranial circumference?

I have been to a requisite Barbecs breakfast and a ride after, so does that technically make me a Clown as well?

There's no formal ceremony. If you ride with the Clowns, you become one. That's why Mark L. would never ride with us, even though he's responsible for naming our group.  Cheesy

Ordered another BASECAMP helmet. It's 2 oz. lighter than my white GIRO helmet, and $225 cheaper. The tinted shields on both helmets are polarized.

$259 GIRO Air Attack Shield helmet on left. $34 BASECAMP helmet on right.

Well, just placed the order...now I'll look like Jay. The 2 tone white one looked the best for me...like a blank canvas...I also got the yellow lens for low light conditions.

"...I also got the yellow lens for low light conditions."  It's amazing how those yellow lenses enhance your vision under low light conditions. I have a pair of clip-on yellow lenses I use on my glasses.

Wore my safety-yellow GIRO Air Attack Shield helmet, riding in Richardson and Collin County traffic this morning. This was the first time I've worn one of my GIRO helmets, since I purchased my first BASECAMP helmet. The shield on the GIRO helmet is too close to my face and jacks up my glasses to where I'm looking out of the middle portion of my trifocals. I'll only wear one of the GIRO helmets in an emergency in the future.

Wow!  The fake Giro was so bad that it damaged the testing equipment.

For something completely different, what about a fighter pilot helmet?  This one gets big style points.  Okay, you may have to re-paint it:

yeah i'm not sure I'd be up for that ..  the shark though .. that I could get into ..  Unfortunately they don't make one in the right size for my fat head.

I'm pretty sure whatever certs it would have are illegitimate too .. but I'm not sure that bothers me so much ...

The helmet that failed two portions of the EN 1078 test conducted in the video was a counterfeit GIRO helmet.

The BASECAMP helmets have stickers inside them indicating they comply with DIN EN 1078, which is the European standard for bike helmets. After a brief search, it appears to me that bike helmets imported into the U.S. after 1999 are required to comply with Consumer Product Safety Commission Standard 16 C.F.R., Part 1203. My GIRO helmets have stickers in them indicating they comply with the CPSC standard. Haven't made a comparison of the two standards, so don't know which one is the most stringent.

From someone that makes a living importing things from china ..  never trust a sticker (or any other certification) coming out of there without verification.    Products aren't the only thing thats faked.      I've seen some pretty amazingly well done certification forgeries. Heck there are places in the Canton Fair http://www.cantonfair.org.cn/en/index.aspx  that will sell you whole compliance testing (on paper)  for pretty much anything you want.     I made a joke once about getting some Level VI ballistic penetration certs for the spandex stuff we sell and seeing if we could market it to certain politicians and regimes.  Unfortunately, if effective,  such a market would only be short duration, not much reoccurring sales.

A good sign of a fake compliance situation is when you find a other-country-sticker in the box rather than your own.   Can't get customs to pull your stuff for that, they won't care.

IMO (and I've looked)  EN1078 is better than CSPC/Snell    Europeans take this stuff seriously.   Thats why I'm buying helmets in the EU now and not the US.

In both the European and U.S. tests, weighted test helmets are dropped from certain heights onto both flat and angled-edge anvils. The six Clowns, including #1 Clown, that did breakfast at Barbec's this morning decided we would be safe, regardless of what helmet we were wearing, if we avoided situations where anvils could possibly be dropped on our heads.  Cheesy

Now that made me laugh Jay! Haha. I only wear my helmet to be a role model for my grand kids. This old hard head would break the anvil. I really like the helmet, thanks Jay and Mark.

This helmet might be my winter helmet as it does not have many vent holes. I may also pick up one like this: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B073FJY5PM/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?smid=A1S7T1ZU 8V1Q4S&psc=1

Here is my second Basecamp helmet review. I neither endorse wearing helmets or condemn their use. https://youtu.be/DVf8IBHVBbA

I love the helmet, but I do have a few issues with it. The paint comes off very easily and the lense scratches pretty easy also. I think I will order a replacement lense and have it sprayed with a better finish coat. It is very light weight and I have ridden with it in 103 degrees, and it is just as cool, if not cooler, than my Giro with over 20 air vents. Overall, for the money, can't beat it. I can buy 5 more complete helmets and still be cheaper than one Giro Attack!

I just got mine in the mail yesterday.  Looks and feels great.  Thanks for the info and review guys, I had been looking at the Giro, but hated to spend the $ for it.  I also ordered the retractable lens model, it hasn't arrived yet and I'm anxious to compare the two.

Brad, let us know what you think of the retractable shield helmet, after you receive it. If you order the helmet that includes three shields, please let us know if the "flash" shield blocks the sun more effectively than the tinted shield does.

Will do!  I ordered it from Ebay as it was about $20 cheaper than Amazon.  Downside is that shipping will take longer.  It does come with the three face shields.

I finally received the Basecamp sliding visor helmet.  I ordered it thru Ebay ($36.99 plus $3.00 shipping) vs Amazon ($54.84) as it was cheaper; however it took over 3 weeks to arrive from China. The removable visor Basecamp helmet weighs in at 291 gms w/visor attached and the sliding visor Basecamp helmet, the pink one, weighs 285 gms.  The sliding visor comes with three different visors, gray, yellow and metallic (flash).  The sliding visor works well and is easy to remove and change out between the other visors.  The sliding visor is shorter than the removable visor and covers less of your face.  The sliding visor helmet is somewhat longer and more bulbous in the front, making it less aero in my opinion, than the removable visor helmet.  My major complaint with the sliding visor helmet is that it will not clear my glasses, so I cannot wear my glasses while wearing this helmet.  The removable visor helmet however works well with my glasses.  The metallic (flash) colored visor works great in bright sunlight, better than any other colored lens or visor that I have used.  One unusual thing that the sliding visor helmet has is the chinstrap lock.  I have included photos, it has a clicking mechanism, similar to some I have seen on some bike shoes.  Please note that I purchased the sliding visor helmet in the "hot pink" color for my wife.  I quit wearing that color many years ago. LOL  Both helmets are very adjustable, as my wife has a small head, and I have a large head (due to such a huge brain, I am sure) and we are both able to wear either helmet.

Thanks for your review, Gary. Guess I won't be ordering the retractable shield helmet, since it won't accommodate glasses. Going to see if I can separate-order a flash shield for the Basecamp helmets I currently own.

Looks like they are about  $19 on Amazon Jay. If they are darker, I might get one as well.

Received the Basecamp "flash" shields Friday. Used one of them on my helmet when I rode at WRL this afternoon. The flash shield has a darker tint than the grey-tinted shield. It also has a reflective coating on the outside surface. When using the flash shield I don't have to squint when the sun is overhead, like I have to when using the grey-tinted shield. I can see the large digit "mph" display on my Cateye Padrone computer when using the flash shield, but can't see anything on my Garmin Edge 500 computer's screen, unless the sun is shining on it. Younger riders would probably be able to read their computer's displays when wearing the flash shield.

Thanks Jay. Exactly why I don't like all the "smartness" of search engines trying to only show me what they think I want!
