Just tonight, I was watching To Tell the Truth, and this guy, Daniel Burton was on as the first person to get to the South Pole.  He used a fatbike:

Can anyone resolve this?

Maria was the first on a HPV. Daniel was first on a two wheel bicycle.

It could be that she started inland and was then trucked further inland before starting on the trike, where as Daniel started at the cost and rode the entire distance from his starting point.
 
Another difference is the distinction between bike and HPV.  Some people do not see it as two slices from the same pie.
 
And the distinction between bicycle and tricycle.
 
At the end of the day they both accomplished a significant expedition in extremely harsh conditions that most people could begin to imagine.  Extreme adventurers are a completely different breed.
