Title: "What's the Fastest You've Ever Clocked?"
Post by Action Lad on Jul 9th, 2012, 4:25pm

Even in various conditions:

1). Straight, level course

2). Downhill (even give the gradient, if known);

3). Whatever!

I'll start off.  The fastest I have ever gone on the 700 is 57- or 67mph on a short 11% hill with an intersection at the bottom. [smiley=jawdrop.gif]
It was some time ago, and the data was lost with the Garmin. . .  :'(

Just over 41 down hill (just a few degrees on Hwy 5 headed south, before the bridges) on the old Infinity (since sold) early in the morning with not much more than position lights, and of course that's when I had the Golden Eagle Bike Engine installed!  I was peddling as fast as I could and the motor was just about topped out.

Being dark with almost no lights made it seem so much slower...only thing I needed was to have my hair on fire!  Woo Hoo!!  That same day on the way home broke 7 spokes on the drive side of the rear wheel.  Never rode the bike (before I sold it) or the engine (which is still for sale) again...now I have the SXP and I can't seem to get it over 33!!

I've hit 55 mph before on my old road bike.  I was somewhere in the SW corner of Wisconsin, (danged if I can remember where).  I just remember climbing up a ridge line or three and then dropping down into a valley.

I'm still looking for a big enough hill around here to break 55 on...

On my trike about 38 MPH, just about the same place you saw me months ago tightening my rear spokes.....

41.9 on the first ever CCRBENT ride on Jay's xstream.  I'm guessing it was the downhill in front of McKinney HS?  I'll have to take my Corsa up there to see if I can beat that speed.

Downhill:  Just over 60 on the Race Across Oregon a few years ago.  My Partner, Chris, hit just shy of 70.  Didn't want to go that fast but I was afraid if I kept trying to scrub speed I'd melt the brakes!

TT:  A fairly hilly TT - the Texas State Time Trials, saw me come in at exactly 55 minutes for the 25 miles.

Flat:  40.1

Big hills in Cedar Hill State Park.  I've done 33mph on my trike.  My hair standing on end kept raising my helmet.

Guess I'm a serious wimp....only 47 on several bikes bikes i've ridden.  If ya like climbing hills the roads around ardmore are great for a speed fest down hill.  I hate thinking about the  speed rating these skinny tires have cause i really like my skin.

I routinely hit 35-36mph on the Lake Forest hill (aka Nemesis Nill) by Boyd HS in McKinney.

36 (on a hill) but I started thinking about what a blowout might do and slowed down.

65mph down a 23% grade on a DF racing bike 30 years ago before I could sense my own mortality as well as I do now.

25.7mph (58min) in the Alabama State 40K TT in the early 80's on the same road bike,  Pre aero anything.  Also the race in which  I had to dodge @20 rattlesnakes.  Board Flat (see Sprott, AL).

I once did a 1:14.2 (30.1mph) at the thingy Lane Velodrome in the standing start 1KM in 1983 which isn't easy on that track.

Patti,
At high speed, (circa 25 mph), trikes don't flip, or anything, like SUVs.  You just feel much less response from your imputs.  You say, "Hmmm, what's up with the trike?" You look down, and..."Oh."  Anticlimactic.  Been there with fronts, and the rear.

Downhill on a 23% GRADE?  You're my kinda guy.  Wish I could see that video.

RANS Stratus XL with front fairing and tailbox (2002): 59 mph downhill in northern Michigan (just a nice hill, no mountains in MI).

+++++++++++++++++++

Quest (2011): 70.8 mph eastbound down McDonald Pass (using the brakes liberally trying to keep a reasonable speed).

Quest (2011): 65+ mph southbound over the Salina River north of Hays, KS (later found out that the Cateye speedo I was using had a maximum speed display of 65 mph so now unsure of real speed).

Quest (2011): 50-55 mph Tucson, AZ every single ride on many different roads 2-3% grades

Quest (2011): 38 mph (3+ miles) Tucson, AZ ran out of gears on flat (+/- .5%) road while successfully trying to lose an annoying DF rider attempting to draft.

Analysis: weak, still overweight rider on awesome bike!

Two weekends in a row, my Cateye Strada Cadence has recorded 40.0 as my max speed on a downhill.

Is there a limit on the speed that this thing can record?

Is said Quest in the DFW area?  If so, when/where can we see it?

Max speed this computer will register is 125 mph.

You need to check on the Cateye website for your specific model (look in the "specs" section). The wireless Cateye Strada has a max display of 64.9 mph while the wired version is much higher (possibly it was 125, but I don't remember because the speed they quoted was one I didn't expect to be reaching). I used my wired Cateye Strada during ROAM.

My Quest is located in Midland, TX for the next week or so, and then it is being relocated to northern Michigan so my Dad can use it for the next year while I am away in China.

NOT highly recommended. Montana, about 3 years ago on the Tour de Wyoming. Long, smooth downhill on a lowracer. My biggest fear was a gust of wind that would have resulted in who-knows-what.

50mph downhill on the Real Ale Ride in Blanco this year. See the video of the downhill:

About the 1 minute mark I pass a DF like it's standing still.

43mph in Frisco heading to Lake Lewisville. I passed a car and scared the beheebus out of the girl driving. You should have seen her eyes. One of the best feelings ever on a bicycle.

Speed limit was 40, I think I'd have been proud to get a speeding ticket on my bent.

Ima baad baaaad boy.

On the trike, I've hit 40 coasting down the hill on Keist toward Potter's House.  Got to 49 on the Moose down Freefall Hill on the Munster ride (RAT Rider passed me there on his M5).  Got somewhere over 50 on the Madone in Colorado--I didn't look too closely at the time.   [smiley=twitchy.gif]

42mph on a Domane while aero tucked... Scariest thing I ever done on Lycra...
39mph on Corsa.  Didn't get chance to test it on same hill as th Domane.  Figure it would hit mid 40s easy

That's a nice little stretch.  It's part of the RBM Trikes Only Recumbent Ride on the last Saturday every month, and part of my daily loop when I lived on Shiloh Rd., Plano.

49.9 & 56 today on the hills close to my house on my Rans V2 with fairing. The hills are 13-15% overall with an 18-19% section. The hills here in east central, MO are not very high, but on the back rodes they are steep. Up the same hills back home...3-5 mph!!! That is with several stops. 28 miles round trip with about 45 hills ranging from 8% to the fore mentioned ones.

Going downhill I'm not that fast, I've donated one hip to medical science and don't care to donate the other, best is around 40-45

Fastest on the flats was this past weekend at the Bike Around The Bay in Galveston, did 84 miles with a 22.9 average, the last 40k was 24.5.  Did it back in 2010 when the course was 70 miles and finished that with a 23.6 average

The previous picture is the 18-20% hill that I hit 56 mph's. As you can see it is followed by a 13-16% hill and they are one after the other. I think I have attached another picture to this post. You want some hills?  These are some hills.  Wow.
Where is this again?  As you're suffering going uphill, you have pretty foliage to view.  This place has it all.  Even when you go downhill, very few intersections to stop you.  Very cool.   [smiley=thumbsup.gif]

Do I suffer up the hills? I look like a dead snail going up. And I feel like a dead horse! [smiley=deadhorsebeat.gif] I can feel for the pilgrims coming through here and the Appalachian, Smokey, Adirondack, Rockie mountains and all the other places with hills in a wagon with horse or oxen. I do this for fun and exercise. They did it out of nessecity.

I did! I rode Hilltop Road yesterday to Old Alton Rd. twice. Got up to 42 mph going back down toward Country Club Rd. That is in Argyle, TX, not MO! Next up is the hills of east TX and western LA. Don't you just love hills?

Haven't been able to ride the last several days...one of the stents in the old ticker is occluded...blocked! I tried David Fort to 1830 to 407, but half way up the hill on David Fort and my chest was burning and arms were on fire. Felt real nauseated. I knew right away what was going on. Had a stent do the same thing a couple of years ago. Back to the garage for repairs!! I'll have it fixed and be back in December for a rematch.
